Herbs, annual; stem usually 1, erect, usually branched distally, indumentum absent or of simple basifixed hairs. Leaves cauline, alternate, 1-3 pinnatifid or margin dentate, glabrous. Synflorescence cymose, lax +/- flat-topped or reduced to solitary terminal capitulum. Capitula pedunculate, heterogamous, radiate. Involucre cup-shaped, 15-25+ mm diameter. Phyllaries 25-60+, in 3-4 series, rigidly herbaceous, margins and apices scarious. Receptacle convex, epaleate. Ray florets: 10-21+, in one series, female, fertile. Corolla limb yellow or yellow and white, linear, oblong or ovate. Disc florets: Many, 60-150+, yellow, bisexual, fertile. Corolla funnelform or tubular, apex 5-lobed, tube gland-dotted. Anther bases obtuse; apical appendage ovate-elliptic. Style branches linear, apex truncate. Cypselae dimorphic: Ray achenes 3-angled, each angle +/- winged; corona absent; Disc achenes compressed-prismatic to columnar, adaxial, rarely abaxial angles +/- winged, faces ribbed, glabrous, sometimes gland-dotted between ribs; corona absent. Pappi absent in both ray and disc florets.

Herbs, annual, glabrous or so. Stems erect, up to 120 cm tall, unbranched or few branched above middle. Leaves alternate, sessile; leaf blade glabrous, narrowly elliptic or elliptic- lanceolate in outline, 8-10 cm x 3-5.5 cm, 1 or 2 (or 3)-pinnatisect or pinnatifid, primary segments 2-4 paired (occasionally lower primary segments undivided), ultimate lobes ovate or linear, margin dentate; upper stem leaves gradually smaller. Capitula ca. 5.5 cm across, radiate, terminal, solitary (or few, not forming conspicuous panicle); peduncle 15-20 cm long. Involucres cup-shaped, 1.5-3.0 cm diameter. Phyllaries in 4 series: inner ca. 1 cm long, apex widened, margin and apex scarious; outer 3 series have small phyllaries, ca. 4 mm. Receptacle convex and epaleate. Ray florets: 20-22+ in 1-2 series, female, fertile. Corolla tube 4 mm long; limb 1.5 cm long, apex 4-lobed, basal region yellow, distally pale cream. Ovary 2-3 mm long, triangular with hyaline wings at angles, style 3 mm long, bifid, branches slender, apex truncate. Pappus absent. Disc florets: Many, 60-150+, bisexual, fertile, ca. 6 mm long. Corolla with lower cylindric, ca. 3 mm long tube and upper funnelform throat, ca. 3 mm long, apex 5-lobed, lobes 1 mm long, triangular, bright yellow, recurved; tube gland- dotted. Anther bases obtuse, apical appendages ovate-elliptic. Ovary compressed-prismatic, 2-3 mm long, generally 1-ribbed; style ca. 3 mm long, bifid, branches slender, apex truncate. Ray cypselae triquetrous, 2.5-3 mm, angles +/- winged, faces obscurely nerved or ribbed. Disc cypselae +/- prismatic, +/- compressed, 2.5-3 mm, obscurely ribbed, sometimes with adaxial (rarely the abaxial) angles +/- winged. Pappus absent in all cypselae.
